Recycled Crushed Concrete

America has reached the point where a growing percentage of urban construction, both highway and commercial, requires the demolition of existing older structures. The demolition is only the first challenge.

What does a contractor do with tens of thousands of tons of concrete and steel rubble?

Sandy Bottom Materials provides a service/product that solves a portion of this problem. We are a company that recycles concrete. We do not do the actual demolition, but we crush the concrete rubble, either on the job site or at our facility, removing any steel, to make graded aggregate and flexible base that meets standard specifications.

Sandy Bottom Materials realized dump sites for old concrete were rapidly becoming filled. The dumps that were available to us were located further out, which made transportation costs higher and dumping fees were increasing. The circumstances were right for concrete recycling to make economic sense and SBM took the opportunity to provide a cost-effective option to area contractors. We try to locate our plants between the source of concrete rubble and where it has to be disposed of.

How do we get the recycled crushed concrete?

Concrete rubble up to 4 feet in diameter is fed into a crusher where it is taken down to 5 inches or less. Pickers then remove any steel in the material and it is then screened until all material is 1 ½ inches or less. Then material is moved to a stockpile and made ready for delivery.

We currently operate six facilities in the Eastern Virginia area. Each site accepts disposal of CLEAN (no trash or dirt) concrete rubble free of charge. This service provides contractors involved in a LEED project an excellent opportunity to acquire points by recycling. Contractors also gain points by using our high quality finished products produced through the crushing and recycling process.

We produce Flexible Base, which is used for base under paving to numerous municipalities. Other uses include capping building pads, temporary roads and building staging areas. Additional materials produced from concrete crushing include a 3/8” minus base, 1½” rock for draining fill and 3” rock used for construction yards or entrances.
